FAQ's

Q. What is the best type of stone to use for a driveway?

A. We find that using a crushed stone approximately 3/4" in size is the best for driveways. Fortunately we have over ten varieties of stone suitable for driveway use. Colors range form standard grey to tans, reds, and multicolor blends.

Q.What can I do to get rid and prevent weeds from growing in my driveway?

A. This is a tough questions to answer. I would like to begin by say there is no 100% foolproof way to get rid of weeds. They even grow in asphalt and concrete. The best way to keep a weed free driveway is unfortunatley to keep up with maintenance! Herbicides are always an option but not everyone likes to use them. Installing a geo-textile fabric under your driveway will help substantially reduce the number of weeds coming up through your gravel as well. Whichever way you choose McCarthy Stones has the tools and products to help you get it done.

Q. How do I calculate how many tons of stone I need for my driveway?

A. The first thing you need to figure out is the square footage of your driveway. To do this you simply measure the length and the width of the driveway. Then multiply the length x width to get your square foot. 3/4" stones cover approximately 100 square feet per ton at approximately 2" deep. For an existing driveway the coverage is approximately double at 200 square feet per ton.

Q.How much mulch do I need to cover my flower beds?

A. To find out how much mulch is needed to cover your gardens you must first find out how large an area you have to cover. Shredded mulch covers approximatly 100 square feet of garden 3" deep per cubic yard. To figure the square foot of your garden simply measure the lenght and multiply it by the width to get your square footage. Lenght x Width = Square Foot
